The International Plumbing Code (IPC) establishes minimum requirements for plumbing systems through both performance-based and prescriptive provisions while allowing the use of new and innovative products, materials, and technologies. The code is designed to promote public health, safety, and welfare by ensuring efficient and reliable plumbing installations.
Key updates to the IPC include revisions to the table specifying the minimum number of required plumbing fixtures. Single-user toilet rooms containing one water closet and one lavatory are no longer required to be designated exclusively for male or female use. Additionally, solar thermal water heating systems must comply with the ICC 900/SRCC 300 standard. The code also requires well systems to conform to the NGWA-01 standard in jurisdictions where local regulations do not adequately address the subject matter or lack sufficient detail.
